Prevent Drowning: Bath Safety Tips for Parents and Caregivers

January is Bath Safety Month, a perfect time to reflect on keeping our little ones safe during bath time. Did you know that drowning is the leading cause of death for children aged 1-4? This heartbreaking fact highlights the need for extra care and vigilance. Drowning happens quickly, silently, and can have devastating consequences—but the good news is that it’s preventable with the right precautions.

Why Bath Safety Matters

Drowning can occur in as few as 20 seconds, often without any noise or visible struggle. A child can slip under the water before a caregiver  notices. By staying prepared and informed, you can make bath time a safe and enjoyable experience.

Essential Bath Safety Tips

Here are some simple yet powerful tips to keep your little ones safe:

  1. Never Walk Away
If you need to leave the bathroom, take your child with you.
  2. Supervise Constantly
Never leave a child unattended in the bath, not even for a moment. Your presence is the best safety measure.
  3. Prepare Ahead
Having everything you need within arm’s reach—from soap to shampoo—reduces the risk of distractions or leaving your child alone.
  4. Use Appropriate Water Levels
For infants and toddlers, keep water levels low. Remember “2 under 2”: 2 inches of water or less for kids under 2 years of age. Even a few inches of water can pose a risk.
  5. Check Water Temperature
Test the water with your wrist or elbow to ensure it’s warm but not hot. Aim for a safe temperature around 100°F (37°C) to prevent scalding.
  6. Stay Within Arm’s Reach
Always stay close enough to intervene quickly if needed.
  7. Teach Water Safety Early
As children grow, help them understand the importance of respecting water and avoiding rough play in or near it.
  8. Invest in Safety Tools
Use non-slip mats in the tub and on the bathroom floor to prevent falls. Consider adding a bathtub spout cover to reduce the risk of injuries.
  9. Empty the Tub Immediately
Drain the tub completely after use. Standing water can still be dangerous.
  10. Be Aware of Distractions
Keep your focus on your child. Avoid texting, phone calls, or multitasking during bath time.
  11. Learn CPR
In the rare event of an emergency, knowing CPR can make all the difference. Consider taking a class to feel more prepared.
